A Bonafide Amateur!

Austin Kleon in his 2014 book Show Your Work quotes C.S. Lewis about being an Amateur.

The fellow pupil can help more than the master because he knows less. The difficulty we want him to explain is one he has recently met. The expert met it so long ago he has forgotten

C.S. Lewis h.t. to Austin Kleon

That is the power of the modern internet. Finding others amateurs to help you on your journey. That is why I started to write. That is why I hope you write on your own blog.

There are far too many amateur’s posing as professionals putting together courses to make a buck, selling you the 9 steps to a successful life.

Rather find a fellow student in your field but who might be a few grades ahead of you and ask to study together.

Sometimes the lessons of life are right in front of you.

Alanis Morissette: All I Really Want (1995)

Why are you so petrified of silence
Here, can you handle this?
Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines
Or when you think you’re gonna die?
Or did you long for the next distraction?

At the moment you feel distracted. That is the moment to press forward. What is in that moment? What pain are your seeking to avoid by picking up your phone? By opening another tab. Having a drink? What is that?

The answer will help resolve issues.

Look for the Helpers

Us Texans have had a rough week. The once in 100 year winter storm that the state did not prepare for cause it just might not happen. It happened.

I spent too much time on twitter. I started to fall into the blame game trap.

Thankfully I read Austin Kleon’s blog. He writes daily.

He posted Look for the helpers which is a video a quote from Fred Rogers sharing a story his mother taught him.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. Fred’s Mother

Then he posted a video of a wonderful man twitter named Thor Harris teaching a simple way to fix your own pipe if it busted. Here is the Link

Reading this blog post vs doom scrolling twitter changed my outlook and my actions. I walked about my front door today and looked for neighbors I could help with their downed trees.

Looks for the helpers. Be the helper.
